WebP is a modern image format masterminded by Google and released in September 2010. it offers superior lossless and lossy compression for web images. It is now supported by many browsers and image-editing tools.
WebP images are perceived to be SEO-friendly due to the fact that they help improve page load times, which can have a positive impact on search engine rankings.
It’s no more news that page load time is a ranking factor (as stated by Google), so using WebP images on your website is a potential way to boost your website’s search engine visibility and ranking.
Also, the image size of WebP is small compared to formats like PNG and JPG which in turn reduces the website loading time, improving the user experience, which is also an important part of SEO.
But most images on the internet, on stock photo libraries, and graphics generated with design tools such as Canva are yet to support WebP.
Steps to Take Image Screenshots as WebP
You can take screenshots of images you need in WebP without losing their quality. For, this, we’re going to be using a nifty Chrome extension called Screengrab! To do that follow the below steps:
Step 1:
Proceed to the Google Chrome web store or Microsoft Edge addon and search for “Screengrab“. Install and enable the extension on the Chrome browser.
Step 2:
Click on the extension icon, to find the screengrab extension, then pin it to make it accessible whenever you need to a screenshot
Step 3:
Click on the Screengrab icon, and find settings, just down below the icon window.
Step 4:
Right on the main settings page, change your screenshot format to WebP, as seen in the image below. Then close the window.
Step 5:
Take a screenshot of the images you need in WebP format using the Screengrab tool.

PS: The extension has been removed from the Chrome web store, however, you can use it on the Microsoft Edge browser by adding it from the Microsft Edge add-on store. Here is a link to the same extension on Edge.
