An entry-level web designer earns anywhere between ₦80,000 and ₦150,000 a month – if they’re working under a web design agency. This is quite small compared to worldwide standards, especially in the world of freelancing.

However, we also need to take into account that this salary is static; you get paid even if your agency isn’t working on a new project.

At the same time, there are some Web Designers who can earn as high as ₦500,000 monthly, with the low end in this category being ₦250,000. In most cases, these types of web designers are offered long-term contracts which are usually always renewed based on a retainer or contractual relationship with the clients.

Also, this salary is often common among senior web developers or owners of agencies in charge of multiple websites at a time.

What is the Hourly Rate of Web Designers in Nigeria?

The average web designer will earn anywhere between ₦500 and ₦1,500 per hour. While most web design agencies in Nigeria require that their staff work for no less than 5 hours every workday, it’s important to emphasize that the lower rates are often among entry-level web designers or with agencies with a relatively small overhead.

Meanwhile, these pay ranges only apply to web design agencies or web design contractors who operate their businesses on steady monthly pay. Evaluating in terms of how much a web designer earns per contract is a different ball game entirely.

How much is a Web Designer Paid Per Contract?

A web designer can design a landing page for about ₦100,000, and more advanced projects like e-commerce websites, church websites, news blogs, digital libraries, and social media sites can be between ₦250,000 and ₦2,000,000.

Although these are more or less conventional prices, there are multiple web design products for which the designer earns as high as ₦5,000,000. In the contracting industry, there’s pretty much no cap on what can be paid for a specific project or service.

In addition, most freelance web designers set their hourly rate between ₦2,000 and ₦5,000 per hour. The only difference here is that they’re usually expected to be very productive and often don’t do more than 8hours a week per contract

What are the Skills Required to be a Successful Web Designer in Nigeria?

There are several skills that are required by a web designer to be successful. While some are easily learnable, others you’ll have to develop over time after frequent interaction with clients. The skills include.

  • Visual design
  • User experience (UX) design
  • UI design
  • Responsive design
  • HTML/CSS/JavaScript
  • Utilization of web design and marketing tech (MarTech) tools
  • Typography
  • Color theory
  • Graphic design
  • SEO Principles
  • Communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Time management
  • Collaboration
  • Knowledge of design trends
  • Attention to detail.

Of course, as a new web designer, you need not have all these skills or excel in all of them. However, it’s important that you continuously strive to be better while putting these skills in focus. This is because accepting some may limit your potential as a web designer.
